AltaSea: Reimagining LA's Waterfront

One of the reasons we love LA nonprofits is that so many of these organizations are not just changing the world, they are also changing the way we think about LA as a capital of creativity and innovation. AltaSea, a relatively new player in town, embodies these values and is poised to be a game-changer for the city.

Over the past year, you might have started to hear about AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, a public-private partnership that brings together science, business and education to generate innovative solutions to global sustainability issues. Together with its partners and funders, AltaSea is going to change the face of Los Angeles – and the world – by reimagining the purpose and potential of a seaport.

Hershey Cause Communications is proud to give a voice to this ambitious and complex project, and we are excited to help AltaSea leverage the power of strategic communications to achieve its goals. Here is what you should know:

AltaSea is located on the Los Angeles Waterfront in San Pedro, and will transform a historic pier into a waterfront “Silicon Valley.” The Port of Los Angeles is a partner in AltaSea, and respected Los Angeles leaders including the mayor are already sharing their enthusiasm.
The California-based global design firm Gensler will design the 35-acre AltaSea campus. The campus will be a model of sustainability and an iconic feature of the Los Angeles landscape. (Stay tuned for the reveal of the design renderings later this year.)
AltaSea will spur important discoveries about the ocean, catalyze new marine-related industries and connect science to the community through a world-class education and engagement center.
Groundbreaking for the first phase of AltaSea construction will take place in 2017. However, there is already activity underway at AltaSea, including the Discovery Lecture Series with the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and several new partnerships on the verge of public announcement.

For those of us at Hershey Cause, AltaSea is a signature project, but it is also personal. We were especially moved by recent events saluting our friend Leonard Aube, the former executive director of The Annenberg Foundation who was AltaSea’s guiding visionary since its inception until his untimely passing earlier this year.

The Annenberg Foundation continues to champion AltaSea’s broader vision and current activities. As seasoned professionals in civic and environmental issues, we, too, are eager to see AltaSea turn Los Angeles into a global leader in sustainable solutions for the world’s most complex challenges.

Los Angeles has needed a catalyst for its future that exemplifies the values of innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability. We believe AltaSea is that spark, and we are excited to be a part of this historic transformation.
