POV: What’s Not in a Name?

As communicators, we think a lot about the power of words. We’ve been talking lately about the terms “non-profit” and “not for profit.”

These designations define social-sector organizations in a way that has a lot to do with the tax code but little to do with how or why they actually do their work. We’re excited to be part of a growing movement to redefine mission-first organizations in terms of what they are: “for purpose” or “for benefit.” It’s a powerful shift in thinking that we hope continues to catch on.
